unabashedly ridiculous & fun & sexy, devil may cry meets ninja gaiden meets radiant silvergun meets equilibrium meets a pornstar January 27, 2010 hellfire (seattle, wa) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
check your brain, sense of reality, and expectations at the door. bayonetta is something else.
it's ridiculous, knows its ridiculous, and completely revels in it. from her exaggerated sexy catwalk gait, to the way she kisses barriers away, to the fanservice 'photo op' moments at the end of certain combos, to the way her clothes disappear as you pull off a powerful combo (because her hair not only forms her clothes, but also her most powerful weapons, *of course* they'd get used up when she does something powerful), to the nonsensical plot and cast of characters, to the over the top violent eviscerations...bayonetta is a real gamer's delight...if you have the right mindset. i personally couldn't stop grinning and laughing through the game.
+ everything about this game screams quality (one might argue the script is 2nd grader-quality, but i'd argue it was intentionally so).
+ massive amounts of combos so novices can't help but pull off cool stuff, but also tons of depth so the gamers that want to be *great* can be. there are some tricky combos that can be strung together that are insanely cool - see youtube.
+ not quite as hard as the devil may cry series or ninja gaiden...a bit more approachable, if you can handle the chaos on screen.
+ NOT FOR KIDS. seriously. cussing, partial/implied nudity, violence.
+ hilarious soundtrack. from jazzy-j-pop to orchestral, very unique.
quick tips
- don't spam the dodge button. you're doing it wrong. just like radiant silvergun or bullet-dodgers of the past, you have to focus on where your character is and who's about to hit you. THEN press the dodge button.
- don't button mash. learn the combos, especially the immediate wicked weave ones (e.g. heel stomp). if you can summon those on cue, you won't have as much trouble fighting the flaming enemies (they hurt you if you hit them directly)
- you don't have to finish the game to grind. pressing RB at chapter end lets you re-play any previous chapters. chapter 2 is great for grinding halos early on.
Great over-the-top action game! January 10, 2010 Steven W. Johnston 15 out of 19 found this review helpful
I picked up this game being a fan of the 'Devil May Cry series'. The action is very over the top, and overall plot/dialogue can't be taken too seriously. But the gameplay/cinematics will make up for the overall campy stroy arc.
The plot seems to be very simular to the comic/movie 'Constintine'. An eternal war between paradise and the inferno, the main characters stand between both factions to keep the lines balanced. I'm still very early in the game, but it seems to be stacking cliche plot twists I'm anticipating any moment now. But this really isn't the type of game played for the story-arch.
The gameplay is terribly simular to Devil May Cry, Devil Kings, etc. It is a third person action shooter, with a fairly simple control/fighting scheme. You can string together combos with standard punch, kick, and firearms. Weapons and fighting abilities can be purchased to add more variety in your combos. An amazing feature when aquiring upgrade items is the opportunity to try the attacks before actually purchasing them. It can be frustrating trading in game credits just for an item or weapon you soon realize "yup, I'm never using that." Accomplishing long strings of combos enables more devistating ranged attacks or cinematic "executions". Like holding an enemy while a guilituine or iron maiden appears and you throwing it into the device.
Now the drawbacks. Between stringing attacks and dodging enemies, the rhythm is very fast paced but easy to learn after the opening stages. Even with good timing, the majority of the gameplay can also be accomplished through button mashing, especially fighting standard enemies from one end of the level to the other. It can become VERY repetitive, even with new finishing movies and abilities unlocked. Because of this, you will see the same cinematics over and over again. Because of this most people will either love or hate the game. The gameplay is linear, there is no sandbox enviroment to wander around in. I think games like this are much more entertaining without the free roaming. Not everything has to entitle a GTA like wandering enviroment, but some people have accepted it as some sort of standard. Campaign mode and nothing else. I don't see what else can really be done with a game like this, but the only bonus outside of the story is online leaderboards.
Overall, if you like 3rd person action platformers, this game is definately worth checking out. Be warned, it is repetitive, but the gameplay seems well worth it. It should also be noted that the violence and overt sexual themes are endless. If by chance you're a concerned parent or offended by either, be warned this game never quits with either.
Pros:
Great action
infinate combo strings between weapons/ability upgrades
"Equilibrium" style gunplay
entertaining fight climax/cinematics
looks gorgeous in HD
mindless entertainment is easy and fun
Cons:
REPETITIVE and overall button masher
campaign, leaderboards, and nothing else
cheesy story/bad dialogue all around
mindless entertainment could get old fast
A New Era in Japanese Action Games January 21, 2010 Andrew Puchniarz 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Hideki Kamiya's impressive resume of games just got a little larger. Bayonetta is one of the most skillfully designed games I've come across in the past few years. The game owes a lot to Kamiya's previous action game Devil May Cry when it comes to basic mechanics, but Bayonetta expands so much on the ability to customize your play style that Devil May Cry feels very basic and mechanical in comparison.
Much in Kamiya's usual satire, Bayonetta pokes fun at the Hong Kong action movie in both style and plot. While the characters themselves have a lot of personality conveyed in superb voice acting, the campy story is nothing to really delve in to. It's paper thin, and the player is left in the dark until the very end. Fortunately for players, there is no weakness in the gameplay itself, which is a relief considering the majority of games for the current generation of consoles. New players will have to get used to the controls of the "stylish action game", but the game's learning curve is forgiving until the player beats the game on normal and moves on to harder difficulties. Bayonetta is a game that's easy to pick up and play, difficult to master, and enjoyable the entire duration for those that enjoy or wish to explore the genre for the first time.
Speaking on behalf of a major fan of Devil May Cry series and action games in general: Bayonetta, aside from the story, is a masterpiece, and it will be difficult for Kamiya to top this one.
Mind-blowing! August 20, 2010 GarionOrb (Houston, Texas United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a game that almost passed me by completely. I had played the demo and was entertained by the over-the-top main character and the frantic combat, but I didn't think this game was worth full price. Exactly 4 days before writing this I picked it up, and I'm so glad I did. Bayonetta is one of the best games I've played this gaming generation!
It's important to note that this game contains features that may not appeal to most players. Button-mashing? Check! (More on this later) Jazzy J-pop music during fight scenes? Check! Overt and gratuitous sexuality (not sex)? Check! So if you're cool with those, then read on.
At the beginning of the game, it's difficult to know what's going on. You're a witch who wields four guns, one on each limb, and can attack with her hair at times. She's sassy, she's sexy, and is really great at those double entendres and one-liners. It's amusing. But after the tutorial and the first couple of chapters, the game's true colors shine. Behind all the flash, you will find a deep story, compelling characters, beautiful vistas, ethereal music and some of the most epic boss fights ever! It definitely took me by surprise!
As far as gameplay goes, it's a hack n slasher that's more similar to Devil May Cry than God of War. The combat is very combo-based, but if you do the right combos Bayonetta can unleash several entertaining means of dispatching her foes. She can conjure up ancient torture devices (such as an iron maiden) to throw her enemies in, for example. In boss fights, she can do a devastating finishing move where her hair turns into a giant dragon. Dodging attacks at the last second results in "Witch Time", where everything slows down but you. Quick-time events are thrown in there too, but not too often. Most levels involve the player controlling Bayonetta through various locales, but every once in a while the game will change things up and have you riding a motorcycle through the streets, or flying through the air. There are five difficulty levels, and if you play on Very Easy or Easy, the combat is defaulted to "Auto". This means that you can simply press the X, Y and B buttons in any order you wish, and Bayonetta will automatically unleash any string of attacks. This is the best way to play if you want to just watch the story and also be able to witness Bayonetta's best attacks without effort. Essentially, mashing buttons FTW! If you play on Normal or above, you have to actually execute all the attacks, and the combat becomes more strategic and less button-mashy. It's entirely up to you. Defeated enemies drop rings that look strikingly similar to those in Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega did publish this game, after all). Rings can be used to buy techniques, accessories, weapons and items from the in-game shop. There are many, MANY more things to buy than can possibly be bought in one playthrough, so completionists out there will want to play this many times. Bayonetta will also run across little trinkets here and there that can be used to synthesize your own items. Most entertaining are the small homages to other Sega games from the past...most obviously the original Space Harrier. There's even a part that hearkens back to Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy!
The story is surprisingly great, and the voice actors do a superb job at giving life to the characters...especially Bayonetta herself. Luka is a pretty interesting person too, and the character of Cereza, who is a mysterious toddler that is integral to the story, is probably one of the cutest characters to grace a video game. The story is told through traditional cutscenes, and also motion comics. At the beginning of the game, the story may seem somewhat shallow, but as it goes on it becomes deep and enthralling. The characters actually grow throughout the game and by the spectacular end they are quite different. There are many more cutscenes than I originally thought. While it's definitely not on the level of Metal Gear Solid games, some cutscenes are rather lengthy, especially near the end. However, all are interesting.
Technically, the game runs extremely well. Full 60 frames per second with no framerate drops to be found on the 360 version. The graphics are simply beautiful. Some of the locations you visit are breathtaking...especially during the last few chapters. The boss design is incredible as the game goes for an evil angelic theme for the enemies. Sound is great as well, with action scenes and battles bordering on sensory overload at times! The game's score (when it's not a Japanese-inspired rendition of "Fly Me To The Moon") is atmospheric and ethereal, and really adds mood to the game.
Before this game was released, many were skeptical about it. Then the reviews came in, and skepticism became confusion at how this seemingly generic title can rate higher than, say, Final Fantasy XIII. After playing it, it became perfectly clear to me why. This game is pure entertainment, and I can't believe I almost missed out on it completely. This is definitely worth trying and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes fast-paced action games!
WOW! My kind of game! January 7, 2010 Derek Vazquez (Springfield, MA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
From the opening sequence till the titilating climax (no pun intended) Bayonetta is a rollercoater ride of sexy, crazy, over-the-top action. I love everything about the game. It screams faintly of Devil May Cry, which it should given the game was created by the same person, but Bayonetta gets my vote for favorite with its ultra sexy heroine, outrageous moves, nonsensical-yet-immersive story, smooth and detailed graphics, and all out fun. Yeah, it's kinda girly at times but throw in buckets of blood and some f-bombs and that evens things out. The game comes complete with it's own anime-styled tunes in the soundtrack conplete with lyrics!!!! It's every Japanese lovin' anime freak fanboys dream come true, which is pretty much myself and everyone I know. At any rate, I know its not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, but action fans should definitely check it out!!!
